Happy Holidays from the Grizzlies!

The past couple months have been great for the Grizzlies.  In November, the Badminton, Basketball, and Table Tennis teams all traveled to tournaments to finish off a successful and busy season before the 2008 Arctic Winter Games.  The athletes and coaches should all be proud of themselves for such a successful and rewarding season.  Many medals were won and some athletes will be getting a chance to show their talents at the Arctic Winter Games.

A congratulations goes out to all those that qualified for the AWG.  They include Mahik (Table Tennis), Calvin (Table Tennis), Suzi (Table Tennis) and Carmen (Badminton).  A special congratulation goes out to Tracy who has been chosen to go the Polar Games for soccer.  Also, Atilla and Maria Csaba will be coaching the AWG Table Tennis team this year.  Great job everyone!

We’d also like to thank all of our sponsors for all of the support they gave our teams this season.  The grizzlies would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and we’re all looking forward to continued practices and games in the coming New Year.  Merry Christmas!

Soccer fever hits Kugluktuk!

This past weekend Kugluktuk hosted the Regional Soccer Tournament.  It was the biggest turn out ever for soccer with teams from Kugluktuk, Cambridge Bay, Kugaaruk, Gjoa Haven, and Taloyoak flying in for the 3 day tournament.

Both the girls and boys played fantastic and had a great time playing their hearts out.  Kugluktuk managed to win one gold in the U14 Girls category and Silver in the U14 and U16 Boys category.  All the teams put out a really great effort all weekend.  A few games were really close and the whole community was on the edge of their seats.  It was great to see such a big turn out from the community to support their Grizzlies.  Even the Grizzly Mascot was out to get the players and fans pumped up.  Congratulations to all the teams and coaches for a fantastic weekend of fun and excitement.

Grizzlies Return with Silver and Bronze Medals

Congratulations go out to our boys and girls volleyball teams.  Both teams played well at the tournament in Repulse Bay.  The girls team made it to the gold medal game and gave Baffin a run for there money, but lost in a close third set.  They brought home the silver medal and Andrea Niptanatiak was chosen as an Arctic Winter Games alternate.  Congratulations girls!

The boy’s team fought hard in every game and it was impressive to see them develop throughout the tournament.  In the end, they brought home the bronze medal and had a great weekend.   The gold medal went to the team from Repulse Bay, and they certainly were an impressive opponent. All the best to our teams next year, and in all of their other sports.  Great job!

Volleyball teams get pumped up!

On October 5th, the boy's and girl's volleyball teams will be traveling to Repulse Bay for the territorial tournament.  Today at Kugluktuk High School, the team came out in full force for a quick PEP rally before the monthly Attendance Award Ceremony.  Loud cheers and laughter could be heard throughout the audience.  The boy’s team came out strong with a quick mock game where Billy Niptanatiak, Allen Jr. went down with a fake injury to the groin. Shortly afterwards the girls team was called out and their cheer got the audience pumped up.

Both teams fly out tomorrow morning and will be playing their first games Friday evening.  The tournament continues right through the weekend, and concludes with a Gold Medal game Sunday evening before the teams head back to Kugluktuk. We wish both teams good luck this weekend and look forward to hearing all about it when you return.

Terry Fox Run
On September 14, Kugluktuk held its annual Terry Fox Run. Despite a bit of cool weather students and community members came out to participate in the run from the High School to the airport and back. Kyle Power and Tory Ivarluk gave prinicpal Gary Kennedy a run for his money by beating him to  the airport. Kyle came up a few feet short finishing only a few steps behind Gary on the way back.

A great effort was put forward by all students in collecting donations from around the community.

Algona set to recieve Aboriginal Achievement Award

Grizzly Alumni, Kenny Algona, has been chosen to receive the Alberta Aboriginal Youth Achievement Award in 2006.  The Métis Nation of Alberta offers awards in eight categories, with a total of 16 recipients throughout the province.

Kenny Algona, Bachelor of Education student at Grand Prairie Regional College, has been selected for the Culture and Heritage award, for his work toward preserving and promoting his Inuit culture and heritage.
Kenny Algona, 20, is a noted athlete, who has competed and earned recognition in many sports, including badminton, lacrosse and soccer.  Algona was a student at the University of Alberta for one year, during which he enjoyed academic and athletic success, but he found it difficult to be away from Kugluktuk. Now, as a student of GPRC, Kenny Algona is happy to be living in a home-stay environment (in a family with many dogs!) and is active in Wolves athletics.  Recently he volunteered to teach athletic skills to children in need through GPRC Wolves and KidSport.
When he has completed his degree, Kenny Algona wants to take his skills and knowledge home to share.

ACTIVATE 2005

BY HELENA BOLT

This month I attended ACTIVATE 2005, a youth conference in Quebec City. It’s all about how we can get more people involved in SPORT. We talked about the barriers that keep people from being active, like sports or volunteering. We also talked about Financial Barriers, Remote Barriers, and Sport in Education Barriers.

I learned that no matter how old you are or what disabilities you have, we all can play sports. I learned that together as a community, we can break these barriers and get more people involved in Sports. There are a lot of people out there who want to help us break these barriers; we just have to SPEAK UP!

Not only did I learn a lot, I had fun doing activities and seeing how with the help of everyone, we can get more people involved in sport and being more active in our community.

Other than that, I met a lot of amazing people who taught me a lot about where they come from and a lot about themselves.

This conference was organised by the ESTEEM TEAM.  The Esteem Team actively recruited a Grizzly member to attend.  To learn more about the ACTIVATE 2005 visit the Esteem Team web site at: www.esteemteam.com

Table Turns in Kugluktuk

We had 23 athletes from Kugluktuk compete this weekend and they were outstanding. They were working hard the whole weekend and the hard work paid off.

Robin Harvey earned a place on the Team Nunavut Arctic Winter Games team by winning a silver medal in the Juvenile Female Division. This means she will be traveling to Alaska this year as well as practicing Table Tennis non-stop between now and then.

In the same division Tracy Evyagotailak won a bronze medal, another outstanding accomplishment considering we have only been playing for one month.

On the whole we should be so proud of how our athletes conducted themselves on the weekend. They were awesome ambassadors for our school and the community.
