Cubs Program

The Grizzly cubs program has been started in Partnership with the elementary school.  The cubs program will foster the same ideas that the Grizzlies promote:  staying in school and healthy lifestyles.  The teachers at the elementary school have been instrumental in getting the cubs program off the ground and running in both the planning stages and in the organisation.  Pauline Mckinnon, will administer the program at JHI with the help of other staff members. The Students in grades 4-6 are very excited about joining team Grizzly but also about having a program that is designed to meet their needs.  The cub members will have there own logo, own clothing line, members nights and more.

Partners with Diavik

The Grizzlies have been eager to share their program with other northern communities.  Thanks to a community consultation partnership with Diavik this just became easier.  Currently the Grizzlies are preparing to visit Wha Ti in NWT to talk about the Grizzly program and hold a Lacrosse clinic.  A delagate of Grizzly youth members will be heading to Wha Ti soon.

Coaching Mentorship Program

One of our new objectives this year is to provide experienced Grizzly athletes with the opportunity to develope into coaches.  It is our hope that they will continue the programs for many years to come. In September, the Grizzlies and Sport Nunavut held  a CBET 'Community Initiation to coaching' clinic.  Several of our athletes also took this clinic and have joined the mentorship program.
Since then,  a Junior Lacrosse program was held at the elemetary school by three Lacrosse players, Adam (19), David (17) and Dettrick (16).  They taught skills and coached in game situations twice a week with the help of the Grizzlies Lacrosse coaches.  This Mentorship program, continued in soccer and basketball.  Mona (20) was the assistant coach for girls basketball for the second year in a row.  Dettrick took the U13 boys team to Rankin Inlet for a tournament with the guidance of the Grizzly soccer coach.
Tolok (19) is running a Junior Basketball program at the elementary school this month.  We also hope to start a Junior Volleyball team soon. Each of these programs is run with an experienced adult coach overseeing the progress of the learning coach.  We believe that this controlled environment will lead to a successful
experience and growth of  both our new coaches and junior athletes.

Grizzly Buddy Program

This year Kugluktuk became the site for Nunavut's FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) intiative . The Grizzlies and the FASD pilot project partnered up to run a mentoring project that would engage youth with children who may be affected by FASD and bring awareness to community members of the importance of community support.  Events are held where older youth would buddy up with a younger child and businesses or organzations will be invited to participate.  During the event healthy lifestyle choices are promoted.  Community groups have come out to play soccer, dodgeball and other games against the Grizzly members and there buddies.
